Kalliovesi

Kalliovesi is a medium-sized lake located in the region of Pirkanmaa, Finland. It is situated approximately 16 kilometers north of the city of Mikkeli and covers an area of around 60 square kilometers.

Geologically, Kalliovesi is a glacial lake formed during the last ice age. The lake's water level is regulated by the Nem meds tee and the Kalliovesi rapids, which flow into the Sorve lassen and then into the Vuoksi River. The latter is a tributary of Lake Saimaa, the largest lake in Finland.

Kalliovesi is renowned for its diverse flora and fauna. The lake's water level and aquatic vegetation vary greatly depending on the water management regulations. The lake is an essential spawning ground for several fish species, including pike, trout, and perch. Additionally, the surrounding area is characterized by an assemblage of plant species, such as black alder, sea buckthorn, and common reed.

Recreational activities near Kalliovesi include boating, fishing, and swimming. The region is also popular with hikers and naturalists who can explore the area's picturesque boardwalks and scenic trails. For instance, the Walkway Trail, a part of the European long-distance trail E2, passes through this area.

Kalliovesi received national protection status in 1990. As a result, this and the surrounding wetlands have been set aside to preserve their outstanding natural features.
