Kaitsejõud

Kaitsejõud is the Estonian term for the national defense forces of Estonia. It encompasses the Estonian Land Forces, the Estonian Navy, and the Estonian Air Force. The primary role of Kaitsejõud is to ensure the defense of Estonia's sovereignty and territorial integrity. It is a professional, standing force complemented by a reserve force.

The Kaitsejõud operates under the command of the Commander of the Defence Forces, who is appointed by the President of Estonia and approved by the Estonian Parliament (Riigikogu). The Minister of Defence is responsible for the overall administration and policy direction of the defence forces. Estonia is a member of the North Atlantic Treaty Organization (NATO) and the European Union, and its defence policy is closely aligned with these alliances.

Conscription is mandatory for male citizens between the ages of 18 and 28, though alternative civilian service is available. The Kaitsejõud emphasizes readiness, modern equipment, and participation in international peacekeeping and collective defense operations. Its structure and capabilities are designed to be adaptable to various security challenges and to contribute to the collective security of its allies.
