Kénvegyület

Kénvegyület is the Hungarian term for a sulfur compound. Sulfur, a chemical element with the symbol S and atomic number 16, readily forms chemical bonds with many other elements, leading to a vast array of compounds. These compounds play significant roles in various natural and industrial processes.

The most common and well-known sulfur compound is hydrogen sulfide (H₂S), which is a colorless gas with a characteristic rotten egg smell. It is toxic and flammable. Sulfur dioxide (SO₂) is another important compound, a colorless gas with a pungent odor, often produced from the burning of fossil fuels and volcanic activity. It is a major air pollutant and a precursor to acid rain.

Sulfuric acid (H₂SO₄) is one of the most important industrial chemicals globally, used in fertilizer production, refining, and chemical synthesis. It is a strong acid and highly corrosive. Other sulfur compounds include sulfur trioxide (SO₃), used in sulfuric acid production, and various sulfides, sulfites, and sulfates, which are found naturally in minerals and are used in numerous applications, from food preservation to pigments. The study of kénvegyület is therefore a broad field within chemistry, encompassing inorganic and organic sulfur chemistry.
