Käivitusenergiat refers to the minimum amount of energy required for a chemical reaction to occur. In a chemical system, molecules are constantly in motion and possess kinetic energy. For a reaction to take place, reactant molecules must collide with sufficient energy to overcome the energy barrier separating the reactants from the products. This energy barrier is known as the activation energy.

When molecules collide with an energy equal to or greater than the activation energy, they can undergo the necessary bond breaking and bond formation to transform into products. If the collision energy is less than the activation energy, the molecules will simply bounce off each other without reacting. The concept of activation energy is crucial in understanding reaction rates. Higher activation energies lead to slower reaction rates because fewer molecular collisions will possess the necessary energy. Conversely, lower activation energies result in faster reaction rates.

Catalysts are substances that can lower the activation energy of a reaction without being consumed in the process. By reducing the activation energy, catalysts increase the rate of a chemical reaction. Temperature also plays a significant role, as increasing the temperature increases the kinetic energy of molecules, leading to more frequent and more energetic collisions, thus increasing the number of successful reactions.
