Kártya

Kártya is the Hungarian word for "card." It is a broad term encompassing various types of cards, most commonly playing cards, but also extending to other forms of identification or transactional items. In the context of games, kártya refers to a deck of cards used for numerous popular Hungarian card games. These games often involve strategic play, trick-taking, and specific ranking of cards. Popular examples include Ulti, Zsírozás, and Tízes. The standard Hungarian playing card deck is similar to the French-suited deck, typically featuring suits of Hearts (piros), Diamonds (tök), Clubs (zöld), and Spades (levél). The Ace (ász) is usually the highest card, followed by the King, Queen, Jack, and then the numbered cards.

Beyond playing cards, "kártya" can also denote other types of cards. For instance, a bank card or credit card is referred to as a bankkártya or hitelkártya, respectively. Identification cards, such as a driver's license or ID card, are known as személyi igazolvány or a similar descriptive term incorporating "kártya." Business cards are called névjegykártya. In essence, the term "kártya" is a versatile linguistic tool in Hungarian used to describe any flat, often rectangular item used for games, identification, or transactions.
