Jódkiegészítés refers to the practice of supplementing the diet with iodine, an essential trace element. Iodine plays a crucial role in the production of thyroid hormones, thyroxine (T4) and triiodothyronine (T3). These hormones are vital for regulating metabolism, growth, and development, particularly in children and during pregnancy. Iodine deficiency can lead to a range of health problems, the most well-known being goiter, an enlargement of the thyroid gland. More severe deficiency can result in hypothyroidism, a condition characterized by a low thyroid hormone level, leading to fatigue, weight gain, and cognitive impairment. In pregnant women, iodine deficiency can cause irreversible developmental problems in the fetus, including intellectual disability.
The primary dietary source of iodine is iodized salt, a common additive in many countries. However, reliance
