Jääskös

Jääskös is a former municipality in the Viipuri Province of Finland. Its territory is now divided between Russia and Finland. The municipality was established in 1922 when it was separated from the larger parish of Jääski. Jääskös was located in the Karelia region, near the Karelian Isthmus.

The main settlement of Jääskös was also named Jääskös. The area was known for its agricultural lands and forests. Like much of southeastern Finland, Jääskös experienced significant territorial changes following World War II. In the Moscow Armistice of 1944 and subsequent treaties, a large portion of Finnish Karelia, including the majority of Jääskös municipality, was ceded to the Soviet Union. The remaining smaller part of the municipality continued to exist as a Finnish municipality until it was merged with other nearby areas.

Today, the former area of Jääskös municipality is part of the Russian Federation, specifically within the Leningrad Oblast. The Finnish part, which is considerably smaller, has been incorporated into other Finnish municipalities. The history of Jääskös is representative of the broader historical context of Finnish Karelia and the impact of geopolitical events on local communities and territories.
