Jäykkäpyörät

Jäykkäpyörät is a Finnish term that translates to "rigid bikes" or "fixed-gear bikes" in English. This refers to a type of bicycle characterized by its simple design, most notably its lack of a freewheel mechanism. In a jäykkäpyörä, the rear cog is directly attached to the hub, meaning that if the rear wheel is spinning, the pedals must also spin. This also implies that the rider cannot coast; their legs are constantly engaged with the drivetrain.

The absence of a freewheel means that riders can control their speed by resisting the rotation of the pedals, and can even pedal backward. Braking is typically achieved through the rider's legs resisting the pedal rotation, or by using a front brake, which is often mandatory for safety in many jurisdictions. Some jäykkäpyörät may also be equipped with a rear coaster brake, though this is less common for the purist fixed-gear experience.

Jäykkäpyörät are known for their minimalist construction, often featuring a single gear ratio and a simple frame.
