Jätteenpoltto, also known as waste incineration, is a waste treatment process that involves the combustion of waste materials at high temperatures. The primary goal of waste incineration is to reduce the volume and mass of waste, rendering it less hazardous and potentially recovering energy from the process. Modern incineration plants are equipped with advanced pollution control technologies to minimize the emission of harmful substances into the atmosphere.

The process typically begins with the collection and sorting of waste. Combustible waste, such as plastics, paper, and organic materials, is fed into an incinerator furnace. The high temperatures, often exceeding 850 degrees Celsius, break down the waste into ash, flue gases, and water vapor. The ash, which is the solid residue, can be further treated and disposed of in landfills or reused in construction materials. The flue gases are then passed through sophisticated filtration systems, including scrubbers and electrostatic precipitators, to remove particulate matter, acid gases, heavy metals, and dioxins.

A significant advantage of waste incineration is its ability to reduce landfill space requirements. Furthermore, many modern incinerators are designed as waste-to-energy facilities, where the heat generated from combustion is used to produce steam, which in turn drives turbines to generate electricity. This energy recovery aspect makes waste incineration a more sustainable option compared to traditional landfilling. However, concerns remain regarding the potential release of pollutants if control systems are not adequately maintained, and the management of residual ash. Public perception and regulatory frameworks play a crucial role in the acceptance and implementation of waste incineration technologies.
