Jännitehuippujen

Jännitehuippujen, a Finnish term, translates to voltage spikes or transients in English. These are sudden, short-duration increases in voltage above the normal operating level within an electrical system. They can occur due to various reasons, including lightning strikes, switching operations in power grids, faults in the system, or the operation of inductive loads like motors and fluorescent lights.

Voltage spikes can pose a significant threat to sensitive electronic equipment. The excessive voltage can exceed the dielectric strength of components, leading to insulation breakdown, damage, or complete failure. This can result in costly repairs or replacements and can disrupt the operation of devices and systems.

To mitigate the effects of voltage spikes, protective devices are employed. These include surge protective devices (SPDs), also known as transient voltage surge suppressors (TVSSs). SPDs are designed to divert the excess energy of a voltage spike away from the protected equipment and safely to the ground. They are typically installed at the service entrance of buildings or directly on individual electronic devices.

The severity of a voltage spike is characterized by its amplitude (peak voltage), duration, and energy content. Understanding these parameters helps in selecting appropriate protective measures. Regular maintenance and inspection of electrical systems and protective devices are crucial for ensuring their effectiveness against these transient disturbances.
