Jälkimmäisestä

Jälkimmäisestä is a Finnish grammatical form of the adjective jälkimmäinen, meaning “the latter” or “the second of two or more items.” It is used to refer to the item mentioned second in a sequence or comparison, as opposed to ensimmäinen, “the first.” In Finnish it is an inflected form that agrees with the noun it modifies in number and case.

The elative singular form, jälkimmäisestä, serves to indicate movement from or origin from the latter item, or to express “from the latter” in phrases where the noun is in elative case. It is commonly seen in written Finnish when relating information to a specific part of a text, a discussion, or a set of options, and it can combine with nouns such as luvusta (chapter), aiheesta (topic), tai kohdasta (section).

Morphology-wise, jälkimmäinen declines like other adjectives in Finnish. The elative singular form is jälkimmäisestä; there are corresponding forms for other cases and for plural, e.g., jälkimmäisestä luvusta (from the latter chapter), jälkimmäisestä aiheesta (about the latter topic), and so on.

- In everyday speech the simpler mutta common synonym viime kädessä the phrase toiseksi mainittu or vain toinen may be used, but jälkimmäisestä is more precise in written Finnish.
