Jurusan

Jurusan is an Indonesian term used in education to refer to a field of study, department, or major within an academic program. In secondary education, jurusan refers to the track chosen in the later years of high school. The common tracks are IPA (natural sciences), IPS (social sciences), and Bahasa dan Sastra (language and literature), though variations exist. The choice of jurusan influences required subjects, electives, and the direction of further education and career.

In higher education, jurusan can denote the department or major within a faculty. It is the organizational unit that administers courses, supervises teaching and research, and coordinates the curriculum for a given field. In many Indonesian universities, the formal unit for degree programs is called program studi (study program), and a jurusan may house several program studi or may be used interchangeably with it in common speech, depending on institution. Programs typically confer bachelor's degrees and may offer master's or doctoral studies; accreditation is granted to program studi by BAN-PT.

The choice of jurusan influences academic requirements, available resources, internships, and job prospects. It also interacts with national education standards, industry needs, and field developments. While the term can be used broadly, its precise meaning varies by institution—some emphasize jurusan as a department, others as a field of specialization within a faculty.
