Juotimuriksi

Juotimuriksi is a Finnish term that translates roughly to "soldering iron rust" or "iron oxide from soldering." It refers to the black, flaky residue that forms on the tip of a soldering iron during use. This residue is primarily composed of oxidized copper and tin from the solder and the copper tip of the iron itself.

The formation of juotimuriksi is a natural consequence of heating these metals in the presence of air. The high temperatures cause the copper and tin to react with oxygen, forming various oxides. This oxidized layer is less conductive than clean copper and can interfere with efficient heat transfer and proper solder wetting.

To maintain the effectiveness of a soldering iron, it is crucial to regularly clean the tip and remove juotimuriksi. This is typically done by wiping the hot tip on a damp sponge or a brass wool tip cleaner. This action mechanically removes the oxidized layer and exposes fresh, clean copper, ensuring good thermal conductivity and allowing for successful soldering. Neglecting to clean the tip can lead to poor solder joints, cold solder joints, and damage to the soldering iron tip over time. Therefore, understanding and managing juotimuriksi is a fundamental aspect of good soldering practice.
