Julmåltider, often translated as Christmas meals, are a significant cultural tradition in many countries, particularly in Scandinavia. These meals are typically elaborate and celebratory, marking the Christmas season and often occurring on Christmas Eve or Christmas Day. The specific dishes and customs associated with julmåltider vary widely depending on the region and family traditions.

In Sweden, a common julmåltid is julbord, a lavish buffet featuring a wide array of dishes. Staples include ham, meatballs, sausages, herring in various marinades, gravlax, and Janssons frestelse (a potato and anchovy gratin). Lutefisk, a gelatinous fish dish, is also a traditional, albeit sometimes controversial, element for some. Rice pudding (risgrynsgröt) is a popular dessert, often with an almond hidden inside, and whoever finds it is said to have good luck for the coming year.

Danish julefrokost shares similarities with the Swedish julbord, but often focuses more on smørrebrød (open-faced sandwiches) with various toppings like roast pork, pickled herring, and liver pâté. Warm dishes like flæskesteg (roast pork with crackling) and æbleflæsk (pork belly with apples) are also common. Risengrød, a rice porridge, is served with a cherry sauce, and a whole almond is concealed for good luck.

Norwegian julemåltider can include dishes like pinnekjøtt (cured lamb ribs), ribbe (pork belly), and lutefisk. The choice of main dish often depends on regional preferences. Multekrem (cloudberry cream) is a favored dessert.
