Jauhatusmenetelmiä refers to various techniques used to reduce the particle size of solid materials. The primary goal of milling or grinding is to increase surface area, which can improve reaction rates, facilitate extraction, or achieve desired physical properties. The choice of method depends on factors such as the material's hardness, brittleness, moisture content, and the desired fineness of the product.

Common mechanical methods include impact milling, attrition milling, and compression milling. Impact mills, like hammer mills, use high-speed impact to break down particles. Attrition mills, such as ball mills or stirred mills, rely on the grinding action of media (balls or beads) tumbling against the material. Compression mills, like roller mills or cone crushers, utilize pressure to fracture larger particles into smaller ones.

Other methods exist for specific applications. Cryogenic grinding involves cooling the material to make it more brittle, improving its grindability. Wet grinding uses a liquid medium to aid in particle reduction and can prevent dust formation. Specialized techniques may be employed for heat-sensitive materials or to achieve very fine particle sizes, often referred to as micronization or ultrafine grinding. The efficiency of a milling process is often evaluated by its energy consumption per unit of material processed and the particle size distribution achieved.
