Jatkosynteesi

Jatkosynteesi, meaning "continuation synthesis" in Finnish, refers to the continuation of Finland's war against the Soviet Union during World War II. This phase of the conflict, which began in June 1941, was distinct from the preceding Winter War of 1939-1940. While Finland initially aimed to regain territories lost in the Winter War, its objectives expanded as the war progressed, aligning with Germany's broader invasion of the Soviet Union.

The initial impetus for jatkosynteesi was the Soviet Union's continued occupation of Finnish territories and its perceived threat to Finnish sovereignty. Finland's military operations were conducted in conjunction with German forces, though Finland maintained its status as a co-belligerent rather than a formal Axis ally. Key objectives included the recapture of Karelia and other areas ceded after the Winter War.

Throughout the conflict, Finland experienced initial successes, pushing Soviet forces back and recapturing lost ground. However, the tide turned in 1944 with a major Soviet offensive. Facing overwhelming pressure and the prospect of complete occupation, Finland was forced to sue for peace. The ensuing Moscow Armistice in September 1944 marked the end of jatkosynteesi, with Finland again ceding territory and agreeing to stringent reparations to the Soviet Union.
