The Japonic language family is a small group of languages spoken primarily in Japan and surrounding islands. The most prominent member of this family is the Japanese language, which is the official language of Japan and has a large number of speakers worldwide. Another significant member is the Ryukyuan language group, spoken in the Ryukyu Islands, which includes languages like Okinawan.

The internal relationship within the Japonic family is generally well-established, with Japanese and Ryukyuan languages being recognized as distinct branches. However, the external origins of the Japonic family remain a subject of considerable debate among linguists. Several hypotheses have been proposed, linking it to Altaic languages, Koreanic languages, Austronesian languages, or even as an isolate language. None of these proposed connections have achieved widespread consensus.

Historically, the development of Japonic languages involved significant internal changes and borrowing from other languages, most notably Chinese, due to geographical proximity and cultural exchange. The written form of Japanese, for instance, heavily utilizes Chinese characters (kanji), alongside its native syllabaries, hiragana and katakana. The study of Japonic languages involves understanding their phonology, grammar, lexicon, and historical development, as well as the sociolinguistic context of their speakers.
