Jahutuspõhimõtted refer to the fundamental scientific principles that govern the process of cooling. Essentially, cooling involves the transfer of heat from a warmer object or space to a cooler one, thereby lowering the temperature of the former. This heat transfer can occur through three primary mechanisms: conduction, convection, and radiation. Conduction is the transfer of heat through direct contact, where the kinetic energy of molecules is passed from one to another. Convection involves heat transfer through the movement of fluids (liquids or gases), where the warmer, less dense fluid rises and the cooler, denser fluid sinks, creating a circulatory current. Radiation is the transfer of heat through electromagnetic waves, which can travel through a vacuum.

Refrigeration systems, for example, utilize these principles. A common method is vapor-compression refrigeration. This process involves a refrigerant that circulates through a closed loop. The refrigerant absorbs heat from the space to be cooled in an evaporator, turning into a gas. This gas is then compressed, increasing its temperature and pressure. The hot, high-pressure gas then releases its heat to the surroundings in a condenser, turning back into a liquid. Finally, the liquid refrigerant passes through an expansion valve, where its pressure and temperature drop significantly, allowing it to repeat the cycle in the evaporator. Other cooling methods include absorption refrigeration, thermoelectric cooling, and evaporative cooling, each relying on different thermodynamic processes and physical phenomena to achieve a temperature reduction. The choice of cooling principle depends on factors such as the required cooling capacity, energy efficiency, cost, and the specific application.
