Jahresweiten

Jahresweiten is a rarely standardized German term whose exact meaning depends on context. It is formed from Jahr (year) and Weite (width, extent), and in general can denote either the length of a yearly time window used for measurement or analysis, or the annual extent of a phenomenon as it unfolds within a year. Because it is not widely established, authors typically define it explicitly when using it.

One possible sense is in time-series analysis or data processing, where jahresweiten may refer to the duration of the annual aggregation window—the period used to compute a yearly observation, such as a fixed 365-day window or a 366-day leap-year window. In this usage, it concerns the temporal scope rather than a calendar label.

In climatology, ecology, or geography, jahresweiten can describe the annual extent of a variable within a year, for example the range between the minimum and maximum values observed over the year, or the distribution of activity across months treated as a yearly width rather than as separate seasons. This interpretation emphasizes the breadth of yearly variation or coverage.
