Jacint

Jacint is a masculine given name of Catalan origin, the Catalan form of Jacinto. It derives from the Latin Iacintus, itself from the Greek Hyakinthos, meaning the hyacinth flower. The name has been used in Catalan-speaking regions since medieval times and remains common in Catalonia and other Catalan-speaking areas.

One of the most notable bearers is Jacint Verdaguer i Santaló (1845–1902), a prominent Catalan poet and priest who helped revive Catalan language and literature during the Renaixença. His work, including L'Atlàntida, is widely associated with the cultural renewal of 19th-century Catalonia.

Today Jacint is primarily used in Catalan-speaking communities and within Catalan diaspora circles. Outside those communities, it is relatively uncommon. The name has cognates in other Romance languages, notably Jacinto in Spanish and Jacinto in Portuguese. See also Jacinto.
