JCRB

JCRB, short for Japan Collection of Research Bioresources, is a national repository and distribution center for biological resources in Japan. It collects, authenticates, preserves, catalogs, and distributes a range of materials to researchers both in Japan and abroad, including mammalian cell lines, microbial strains, tissues, and nucleic acids. A core goal is to provide well-documented, quality-controlled resources to support biomedical research, drug development, and diagnostic science. Materials are accompanied by provenance data and authentication information, with ongoing quality-control measures such as mycoplasma testing and, for cell lines, short tandem repeat profiling where applicable.

The JCRB operates as a public biorepository within Japan’s research infrastructure and collaborates with universities, hospitals, and other biobanks to expand access and interoperability of resources. Access to materials is typically through formal channels, involving an institutional account and a material transfer agreement that specifies permissible uses, redistribution limits, and safety and ethical compliance. The JCRB maintains a publicly searchable catalog that allows users to identify resources by species, disease association, resource type, and donor information, and to request availability and shipment details.

Impact and scope: By providing authenticated resources, JCRB supports reproducibility and comparability of research, facilitates collaboration, and contributes to advances in biomedical science.
