Jätteenpolttoenergia, also known as waste-to-energy (WTE), refers to the process of generating energy from waste materials. This process typically involves the combustion of non-recyclable waste in specialized facilities to produce heat, electricity, or both. The primary goal of jätteenpolttoenergia is to reduce the volume of waste destined for landfills while simultaneously recovering valuable energy resources.

The process begins with the collection and sorting of waste to remove recyclable materials. The remaining combustible waste is then transported to a waste-to-energy plant. Inside the plant, the waste is fed into a furnace where it is incinerated at high temperatures. The heat generated from the combustion is used to produce steam, which in turn drives turbines to generate electricity. In some facilities, the heat can also be used directly for heating purposes, such as in district heating systems.

Jätteenpolttoenergia plays a role in sustainable waste management by diverting waste from landfills, thus conserving land space and reducing the potential for groundwater contamination. It also contributes to energy recovery, decreasing reliance on fossil fuels.
