Jäännösliuotinmäärillä refers to the residual amounts of solvents that may remain in a pharmaceutical product after the manufacturing process. These solvents are used to extract, purify, or formulate active pharmaceutical ingredients (APIs) and excipients. While essential for production, solvents must be controlled to ensure the safety and efficacy of the final drug product.

Regulatory bodies like the International Council for Harmonisation of Technical Requirements for Pharmaceuticals for Human Use (ICH) have established guidelines (ICH Q3C) to classify and limit the levels of residual solvents in pharmaceuticals. These guidelines categorize solvents into three classes based on their toxicity: Class 1 solvents are known or suspected carcinogens and should be avoided; Class 2 solvents have inherent toxicity and their limits are defined; and Class 3 solvents have low toxic potential and generally require no specific limit, though they should still be controlled.

The presence of residual solvents can impact the quality attributes of a drug, potentially affecting its stability, dissolution rate, and even leading to adverse effects in patients if present above acceptable limits. Analytical techniques such as gas chromatography (GC) are commonly employed to accurately quantify these residual solvent levels. Manufacturers must demonstrate that their products comply with these regulatory limits through rigorous testing and process validation. Effective solvent selection and efficient removal during manufacturing are crucial for producing safe and high-quality medicines.
