Jäähdytysvedet refers to water used for cooling purposes, primarily in industrial processes and power generation. This water acts as a heat transfer medium, absorbing excess heat generated by machinery, engines, or chemical reactions and then dissipating it elsewhere, often back into the environment. The source of jäähdytysvedet can vary, including rivers, lakes, oceans, or even treated tap water.

There are generally two main types of cooling water systems: once-through systems and recirculating systems. In a once-through system, water is drawn from a source, used for cooling, and then discharged back to its source, often at a slightly higher temperature. Recirculating systems, on the other hand, use cooling towers or ponds to cool the water before it is reused in a continuous loop. This method conserves water but requires more complex infrastructure.

Discharging heated water into natural bodies can cause thermal pollution, affecting aquatic ecosystems by reducing dissolved oxygen levels and stressing fish and other organisms.
