Jäähdytyskylkylaitteissa, commonly translated as refrigeration or cooling systems, refers to the equipment and processes used to lower and maintain the temperature of a space or substance below ambient temperature. These systems are fundamental to numerous applications across domestic, commercial, and industrial sectors.

The core principle behind most refrigeration systems is the refrigeration cycle, which involves the transfer of heat from a colder space to a warmer one. This is typically achieved using a refrigerant, a fluid that undergoes phase changes. The cycle involves four main components: the evaporator, the compressor, the condenser, and the expansion valve. In the evaporator, the refrigerant absorbs heat from the space to be cooled, turning into a gas. The compressor then increases the pressure and temperature of this gaseous refrigerant. The hot, high-pressure gas flows to the condenser, where it releases heat to the surroundings and condenses back into a liquid. Finally, the expansion valve reduces the pressure and temperature of the liquid refrigerant before it returns to the evaporator, completing the cycle.

Common refrigerants include chlorofluorocarbons (CFCs), hydrochlorofluorocarbons (HCFCs), hydrofluorocarbons (HFCs), and increasingly, natural refrigerants like ammonia, carbon dioxide, and hydrocarbons. The choice of refrigerant is often influenced by factors such as thermodynamic properties, safety, environmental impact (ozone depletion potential and global warming potential), and cost.

Applications of jäähdytyskylkylaitteissa range from household refrigerators and freezers, air conditioning units for buildings, to large-scale industrial chilling systems used in food processing, manufacturing, pharmaceuticals, and data centers.
