Izommködést, also known as myoclonus, refers to sudden, involuntary muscle jerks or twitches. These are typically brief and can affect a single muscle, a group of muscles, or the entire body. The jerks can be rhythmic or erratic, and their frequency can vary. While often harmless and experienced by many people occasionally, particularly during sleep (hypnic jerks), persistent or severe myoclonus can indicate an underlying medical condition.

The causes of myoclonus are diverse. They can stem from neurological disorders such as epilepsy, Parkinson's disease, Alzheimer's disease, and Creutzfeldt-Jakob disease. Metabolic disturbances, including kidney or liver failure, electrolyte imbalances, and certain infections, can also trigger myoclonus. Additionally, some medications and toxins can induce these involuntary muscle movements. In some cases, the cause remains unknown, a condition referred to as essential myoclonus.

Diagnosis typically involves a thorough medical history, physical examination, and neurological tests. Depending on the suspected cause, further investigations like electroencephalography (EEG), magnetic resonance imaging (MRI), or blood tests may be conducted. Treatment strategies are aimed at addressing the underlying cause if identifiable. For essential myoclonus or when no treatable cause is found, medications such as anticonvulsants or sedatives may be prescribed to manage the symptoms, although complete elimination of the jerks is not always possible. Physical therapy can also play a role in improving muscle control and function.
