Izodiskukestävyystestit, also known as Izod impact tests, are standardized methods used to determine the toughness of materials, particularly plastics and composites. The test measures the energy required to fracture a notched sample of a material in a single blow. This provides a quantitative value representing the material's resistance to impact.

The test involves a pendulum-type impact tester. A specimen, typically a bar with a precisely machined notch, is held in place at one end. A weighted pendulum is then released from a specific height and swings down to strike the specimen at the notch. The energy absorbed by the specimen during fracture is calculated by measuring the difference in the pendulum's height before and after impact. A higher absorbed energy indicates greater impact strength.

The Izod test is widely used in quality control and material development to compare the impact performance of different materials or different batches of the same material. It is particularly useful for predicting how a material will perform under sudden shock or impact loading conditions. Factors such as temperature, notch radius, and specimen preparation can significantly influence the test results, and standardized procedures are followed to ensure reproducibility and comparability of data across different laboratories.
