Itävyystestejä, often translated as germination tests, are crucial procedures in botany and agriculture used to determine the viability and germination potential of seeds. These tests provide essential information for farmers, seed producers, and researchers about the quality and suitability of seeds for cultivation.

The primary goal of a germination test is to assess the percentage of seeds that will sprout and develop into healthy seedlings under optimal conditions. This is typically achieved by placing a sample of seeds on or between layers of moist, inert material, such as paper towels, filter paper, or vermiculite, in a controlled environment. Factors like temperature, moisture, and sometimes light are carefully regulated to mimic ideal germination conditions.

The test duration varies depending on the seed type, ranging from a few days to several weeks. During this period, the number of germinated seeds is regularly counted and recorded. A seed is generally considered germinated when its radicle (embryonic root) or plumule (embryonic shoot) emerges.

The results of a germination test are expressed as a germination percentage, which represents the proportion of viable seeds that successfully germinated. This percentage is a key indicator of seed quality and is used to predict field performance. Low germination rates can signal old seed, improper storage, or inherent viability issues.
