Itsekiri

The Itsekiri people are an ethnic group native to the Itsekiri Delta, which is located in the Niger Delta of Nigeria. They inhabit the coastal areas of the Delta State and are predominantly found in the Warri region. The Itsekiri people are one of the many ethnic groups in Nigeria's Niger Delta region.

Historically, the Itsekiri were skilled traders, sailors, and fishermen who thrived on the waters of the Niger Delta. Their maritime skills and deep understanding of the delta's complex waterways enabled them to establish a significant presence in regional trade and commerce. This proficiency in the sea trade contributed to their cultural identity and influenced their language, customs, and traditions.

The Itsekiri language is a member of the Niger-Congo language family and belongs to the Ijo branch. It is closely related to other languages in the region, including the Edo and Urhobo languages. Despite their significant cultural contributions to the Niger Delta region, the Itsekiri language has undergone significant decline in recent years due to the influence of external languages, such as English and Pidgin English.

Today, the Itsekiri people continue to play an essential role in the economic and social dynamics of the Niger Delta region. Their cultural heritage has been preserved and continues to be celebrated through the performance of traditional dances, music, and other traditional practices. Additionally, the Itsekiri people have made significant contributions to the field of igbo language literature and have produced notable writers, artists, and leaders.
