Istrorumun

Istrorumun is a Romance language spoken by a small community in the Istrian peninsula of Croatia and Slovenia. It is considered to be one of the most endangered languages in Europe. The speakers of Istrorumun, known as Istro-Romanians or also known as Vlachs, are scattered across several villages, with the largest concentration historically in the interior of the peninsula.

The origins of Istrorumun are debated, but it is generally believed to have descended from a Balkan Romance dialect that was spoken in the region during the Roman Empire. Over centuries of isolation from other Romance languages, Istrorumun developed its own unique characteristics. It shares some features with Romanian and Aromanian, but also has distinct vocabulary and grammar.

In recent decades, the number of Istrorumun speakers has declined significantly due to assimilation, emigration, and the influence of dominant languages like Croatian and Italian. Efforts are underway by linguists and local communities to document and preserve the language, including the creation of dictionaries, grammars, and educational materials. Despite the challenges, there is a growing awareness of the importance of safeguarding this linguistic heritage.
