Issachars

The Issachars were one of the twelve tribes of Israel in the Hebrew Bible. Their name is derived from the biblical figure Issachar, who was the eighth son of Jacob and one of the twelve sons of Jacob. The tribe of Issachar was one of the larger tribes, but their territory is not clearly defined in biblical accounts.

According to the Book of Numbers, the tribe of Issachar was tasked with providing 54,400 able-bodied warriors for the Israelite army. The tribe settled in the region of Ephraim and Manasseh, and their territory may have extended into the area of the modern-day city of Afula. The Issachars were tasked with maintaining a fifth of the Levites' herds and fields.

In the book of Psalms, the tribe of Issachar is referenced as a tribe of great physical prowess and natural athleticism, with the scribe boasting that his knowledge came from the judgements of Jehovah. However, the tribe is also depicted as being spiritually sluggish, with the Psalmist lamenting the failure of the tribe of Issachar to seek the instructions of their father Jacob.

The name Issachar is still used as a given name by the Jewish community. In the Talmud, the tribe is associated with knowledge, hard work, and academic prowess. The tribe's emphasis on agriculture and craftsmanship suggests a close connection to the land and a practical approach to living.

Today, the concept of the tribe of Issachar is still of interest to biblical scholars and historians. The language and customs of the ancient tribe provide valuable insights into the culture and society of ancient Israel.
