Mathematically, it is represented as the integral of e(t)^2 dt, where e(t) is the error signal at time t. The IsquaredR metric quantifies the total energy of the error signal over a specified duration.

In control engineering, IsquaredR is frequently employed as a performance index for evaluating the effectiveness of a controller. A lower IsquaredR value generally indicates a better-performing control system, as it signifies less accumulated error over time. This metric is particularly useful when comparing different control strategies or tuning controller parameters.
