Isooctanol

Isooctanol is a branched-chain alcohol with the chemical formula C8H18O. It is one of several isomers of octanol. The term "isooctanol" can refer to a mixture of branched octanol isomers, but most commonly it refers to 2,2,4-trimethylpentan-1-ol. This specific isomer is a colorless liquid with a characteristic odor.

2,2,4-trimethylpentan-1-ol is produced industrially through the oxo process, also known as hydroformylation, which involves reacting olefins with synthesis gas (a mixture of carbon monoxide and hydrogen) in the presence of a catalyst, followed by hydrogenation of the resulting aldehydes. It is a primary alcohol.

Isooctanol, particularly the 2,2,4-trimethylpentan-1-ol isomer, finds significant use as a chemical intermediate. It is employed in the production of plasticizers, such as dioctyl phthalate (DOP) and bis(2-ethylhexyl) maleate (MOM), which are used to improve the flexibility and durability of plastics like PVC. It also serves as a solvent in paints, coatings, and inks due to its good solvency properties. Furthermore, it can be used in the synthesis of other chemicals, including surfactants and lubricant additives. Its low volatility and good solvency make it a useful component in various industrial applications.
