Isipatana

Isipatana, also known as Isipattanā Migadāva or Deer Park, is a significant historical and religious site located in Sarnath, near Varanasi in Uttar Pradesh, India. It is renowned as the place where the Buddha delivered his first sermon after attaining enlightenment, setting in motion the Wheel of Dharma. This event is considered the foundation of Buddhism.

The site encompasses a serene Deer Park where the Buddha is believed to have meditated and then preached the Four Noble Truths to his first five disciples. The Dhamek Stupa, a prominent structure at Sarnath, marks the very spot where this foundational sermon is said to have taken place. Ancient Buddhist texts and archaeological evidence confirm the historical importance of Isipatana as a center of Buddhist learning and practice for centuries.

Over time, Isipatana became a thriving monastic complex and a pilgrimage destination for Buddhists worldwide. Numerous stupas, monasteries, and temples were built and expanded upon by various patrons and rulers, reflecting its enduring significance. Although many of these structures have since fallen into ruin, the archaeological remains still offer a glimpse into the grandeur of this ancient Buddhist hub.
