Ionisoinneissa refers to the process of ionization in Finnish. Ionization is a fundamental physical and chemical process involving the addition or removal of electrons from an atom or molecule, resulting in the formation of ions. Ions are atoms or molecules that carry a net electrical charge. When an atom or molecule gains an electron, it becomes a negatively charged ion (anion). When it loses an electron, it becomes a positively charged ion (cation).

In the Earth's atmosphere, the ionosphere is a region that is significantly ionized by solar and cosmic radiation, influencing radio wave propagation. In biology, ion gradients across cell membranes are responsible for nerve impulses and muscle contractions.
