Ioninvaihtopeitteet, also known as ion exchange membranes, are specialized materials used in various electrochemical and separation processes. These membranes are typically thin, semi-permeable sheets that allow ions to pass through while restricting the movement of other species, such as water molecules or larger ions. The selectivity of these membranes is based on their chemical structure, which contains fixed charged groups.

There are two primary types of ion exchange membranes: cation exchange membranes (CEMs) and anion exchange membranes (AEMs). CEMs possess fixed negatively charged groups, such as sulfonic acid groups, which attract and allow the passage of positively charged ions (cations). Conversely, AEMs have fixed positively charged groups, such as quaternary ammonium groups, enabling the passage of negatively charged ions (anions).

In water treatment, they are crucial for processes like electrodialysis, where they are used to desalinate water by removing dissolved salts. They are also employed in fuel cells to conduct ions between the anode and cathode, facilitating the electrochemical reaction that generates electricity. Furthermore, these membranes are utilized in chlor-alkali processes for the production of chlorine and sodium hydroxide, and in the recovery of valuable metals from industrial waste streams.
