Ionigradientteihin, commonly referred to as ion gradients, describe spatial differences in the concentration of ions across a boundary such as a cell membrane or a separation column. They arise when diffusion is restricted and active transport maintains an uneven distribution of ions. In biological membranes, gradients are generated by ion pumps, channels, and transporters, and can be accompanied by an electrical potential across the boundary.

The proton gradient across the mitochondrial inner membrane is the best-known example, created by the electron transport chain and combined with an electrical potential to form the proton motive force that drives ATP synthesis. Other important gradients include sodium and potassium across the plasma membrane, which establish membrane potential and regulate nerve signaling and transporter activity, and calcium gradients that control muscle contraction and intracellular signaling. Ion gradients also exist across organellar membranes, such as the endoplasmic reticulum and lysosomes, contributing to pH regulation and ion homeostasis.

Measurement and analysis use ion-selective electrodes, fluorescent ion indicators, and electrophysiological methods to infer gradients. In analytical chemistry, gradient elution in ion chromatography uses changing salt concentration or pH along a column to separate ions and charged molecules. In microfluidics and sensing applications, engineered ion gradients enable focused transport, separation, or activity.

Maintenance of ion gradients requires energy; disruption occurs when membranes become permeable, channels leak, or pumps are inhibited. Ionigradientteihin are central to physiology, bioenergetics, neuroscience, and analytical methods.
