Iolkos

Iolkos (Ancient Greek: Ἰωλκός) was an ancient city in Thessaly, located on the coast of the Pagasaean Gulf in the region of Magnesia, near the later area around modern Volos. It functioned as a polis in the Archaic and Classical periods and is closely linked with the mythic lineage surrounding Pelias and Jason.

In Greek myth, Iolkos is best known as the royal seat associated with Pelias, who overthrew Jason’s father Aeson and ruled there. Pelias offered to relinquish the throne only if Jason could bring him the Golden Fleece from Colchis. Jason’s departure from Iolkos and his subsequent voyage with the Argonauts began from this city; upon Jason’s return, Pelias’ fate and the political situation in Iolkos became entangled with Medea’s intercession in some versions of the story, leading to Jason and Medea’s exile.

Geography and archaeology surrounding Iolkos are characterized by tentative identifications. The city is traditionally placed in the Pagasaean Gulf region of Magnesia, near what is now the coast around Volos. Some ancient authors locate Iolkos opposite the island of Pagasae across the gulf. Archaeological evidence from proposed sites yields remains from early settlements, but a definitive identification of the city itself remains uncertain and debated.

Historical significance of Iolkos is chiefly mythic and literary; in surviving sources it is portrayed as a royal seat and as the launching point for the Argonautic expedition, rather than as a major independent power with extensive documentary history.
