Inverteerivat

Inverteerivat are animals without a vertebral column. They form a vast and diverse group that includes thousands of species, occupying nearly every habitat on Earth. They range from microscopic organisms to large animals and collectively account for the majority of animal biodiversity. Their bodies exhibit a wide range of forms, from hard shells and exoskeletons to soft, flexible tissues and specialized support systems.

Major invertebrate groups include Porifera (sponges), Cnidaria (jellyfish, corals, sea anemones), Platyhelminthes (flatworms), Nematoda (roundworms), Annelida (segmented worms), Mollusca (snails, clams, octopuses), Arthropoda (insects, spiders, crustaceans), and Echinodermata (starfish, sea urchins), as well as smaller phyla such as Bryozoa and Brachiopoda. Arthropods represent the largest and most diverse group, with insects alone comprising a substantial portion of animal life. Echinoderms are unique among invertebrates for their water vascular system and radial symmetry in adults.

Anatomy and life cycles vary widely. Some invertebrates have segmented bodies and jointed appendages; others are simple sacs or tube-like organisms. Reproduction is mostly sexual, but many groups also reproduce asexually or exhibit complex life cycles with metamorphosis.

Ecologically, invertebrates perform essential ecosystem services: pollination by insects, decomposition and nutrient cycling by worms and other microinvertebrates, reef building by corals, and forming the base of many food webs in marine and terrestrial environments. They influence soil health, water quality, and overall biodiversity, and they support human economies through agriculture, medicine, and ecological tourism.

Conservation and research: Invertebrates face pressures from habitat destruction, pollution, climate change, and overexploitation. Many species remain undescribed, making biodiversity assessment and protection challenging. Taxonomic, molecular, and ecological studies continue to illuminate their roles and evolutionary history.
