Intéresser

Intéresser is a French verb meaning to provoke the attention, curiosity, or interest of someone. It is used transitively to describe something that interests another person, and in its pronominal form s'intéresser it expresses one’s own interest or interest in a topic.

Etymology and form: the verb derives from the noun intérêt (interest), itself from Latin interesse, and was formed with the regular -er suffix to create an action verb. As a first‑group verb, intÉresser follows standard conjugation patterns of -er verbs.

Conjugation: Intéresser is regular in the present tense. Je intéresse, tu intéresses, il/elle intéresse, nous intéressons, vous intéressez, ils/elles intéressent. The past participle is intéressé (masc) or intéressée (fem), used with être or avoir depending on the construction and object placement; in the passé composé with a direct object preceding the participle, agreement may occur. The imperfect and future tenses follow the normal endings: j'intéressais, tu intéressais, il intéressait, nous intéressions, vous intéressiez, ils intéressaient; j'intéresserai, tu intéresseras, il intéressera, nous intéresserons, vous intéresserez, ils intéresseront.

Usage notes: In non-pronominal use, the subject (something) interests a person or group: Ce livre intéresse les étudiants. In pronominal use, s'intéresser à exprime personal interest: Je m'intéresse à l'histoire de l'art. For stating being interested, French often uses être intéressé par or s'intéresser à, with the latter more common for active engagement: Je m'intéresse à ce sujet.
