Intertitle

An intertitle is a piece of text inserted into a film or play, typically to convey information that cannot be expressed through dialogue or action. It is most commonly associated with silent films where they served as a primary means of storytelling, providing narration, dialogue, or exposition. These cards, often presented in a distinct font, could represent spoken words, internal thoughts, or provide context about the setting or plot.

The use of intertitles dates back to the early days of cinema. As filmmaking evolved and sound technology became prevalent, intertitles gradually became less common. However, they have seen a resurgence in certain contemporary films, often used for stylistic effect or to evoke a sense of nostalgia for the silent era. They can also be found in some theatrical productions, particularly those with minimal dialogue or a deliberately stylized presentation. The term "intertitle" is also sometimes used interchangeably with "title card," though "intertitle" specifically refers to text inserted *within* the narrative sequence, as opposed to opening or closing titles.
