Intermodalisation
Intermodalisation refers to the process of using multiple modes of transportation for a single shipment, without handling the actual goods when changing modes. This is typically achieved by using standardized shipping containers or swap bodies that can be easily transferred between ships, trains, and trucks. The primary goal of intermodalisation is to optimize the efficiency and cost-effectiveness of freight transport by leveraging the strengths of each mode. For instance, long-distance transport over water or rail is often more economical and environmentally friendly than trucking, while trucks provide flexibility for last-mile delivery to and from ports and rail yards.
