InterVLAN routing refers to the process of forwarding network traffic between multiple Virtual Local Area Networks (VLANs) within a single network infrastructure. VLANs are logical subdivisions of a physical network that allow administrators to segment traffic and improve security, performance, and management. Since VLANs operate independently within their own broadcast domains, communication between them requires routing.

In a typical network setup, routers or specialized Layer 3 switches handle interVLAN routing. These devices examine the destination IP address in the packet header and determine whether the traffic should remain within the same VLAN or be forwarded to another. This routing can be achieved through static routing, where administrators manually configure routes, or dynamic routing protocols like OSPF (Open Shortest Path First) or EIGRP (Enhanced Interior Gateway Routing Protocol), which automatically adjust to network changes.

A common method for implementing interVLAN routing is using a router-on-a-stick configuration, where a single router connects to multiple VLANs via a single physical interface with multiple subinterfaces. Each subinterface is assigned an IP address within its respective VLAN’s subnet, allowing the router to route traffic between them. Alternatively, modern Layer 3 switches can perform this function natively, eliminating the need for a separate router.

Security and efficiency are key considerations in interVLAN routing. Properly configured access control lists (ACLs) can restrict traffic between VLANs, enhancing security. Additionally, optimizing routing protocols and ensuring proper IP addressing prevents routing loops and improves network reliability. InterVLAN routing is essential in enterprise networks, data centers, and other environments where network segmentation is required.
