Instrumentaalrühmad refers to groups of musical instruments that share similar characteristics in terms of their sound production, construction, or playing technique. These classifications are fundamental to understanding orchestral structure, music theory, and the history of musical instrumentation. The most common and widely recognized instrumentaalrühmad are the string section, the woodwind section, the brass section, and the percussion section.

The string section is comprised of instruments that produce sound through vibrating strings. This typically includes violins, violas, cellos, and double basses in an orchestra. Historically, instruments like the harp and harpsichord are also considered part of this broad category.

The woodwind section consists of instruments that produce sound by the vibration of a reed or by blowing air across an edge. Common examples are flutes, clarinets, oboes, and bassoons. While many woodwind instruments are made of wood, this classification is based on their sound production mechanism rather than material.

The brass section includes instruments made of brass that produce sound when the player's lips vibrate against a mouthpiece. This group features trumpets, trombones, French horns, and tubas. The pitch is altered by changing lip tension and using valves or a slide.

The percussion section encompasses instruments that are sounded by being struck, scraped, or shaken. This is the most diverse group, including instruments like drums, cymbals, xylophones, and timpani. Their primary role can be rhythmic or melodic. These instrumentaalrühmad form the building blocks of orchestras and ensembles, each contributing a distinct tonal color and capability to the musical fabric.
