Innsjøsystem

Innsjøsystem, literally “inland lake system,” refers to the integrated network of freshwater bodies within a drainage basin, including lakes (innsjøer), streams, rivers, and wetlands. The term emphasizes the hydrological connectivity and ecological linkages among water bodies, enabling the transfer of water, nutrients, organisms, and energy through the landscape.

Key components include lake basins, inflows and outflows, groundwater exchange, catchment soils, and associated wetlands. Essential processes are precipitation, evapotranspiration, infiltration, surface runoff, and groundwater discharge, which determine water residence times, mixing regimes, and seasonal dynamics. Nutrient cycling (notably nitrogen and phosphorus) and sediment dynamics strongly influence primary production, algae blooms, and the distribution of aquatic habitats.

Ecological aspects cover pelagic and littoral zones, plankton communities, benthic organisms, fish populations, and riparian vegetation. The system is shaped by climate, topography, geology, land use, and human activity, including freshwater abstraction, hydropower, agriculture, and urban pollution. Disturbances such as eutrophication, invasive species, and climate change can alter water quality, stratification patterns, and biodiversity.
