Inhalointiteknologia refers to the methods and devices used to deliver medication directly into the lungs through inhalation. This delivery route is particularly effective for respiratory conditions such as asthma, chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD), and cystic fibrosis, as it allows for rapid absorption of the drug at the site of action, minimizing systemic side effects.

The core principle behind inhalointiteknologia is the conversion of liquid or solid medication into an aerosol – a fine mist of particles suspended in air – that can be inhaled deep into the respiratory tract. Different types of inhalers exist, each utilizing distinct mechanisms to generate and deliver this aerosol. Metered-dose inhalers (MDIs) are common, using a propellant to expel a measured dose of medication when actuated. Dry powder inhalers (DPIs) deliver medication as a fine powder that is released upon inspiration by the patient. Nebulizers, often used in clinical settings or for patients who struggle with other inhaler types, convert liquid medication into a mist over a longer period of breathing.

Advancements in inhalointiteknologia focus on improving particle size control for optimal lung deposition, enhancing ease of use, and developing smart inhalers that can track usage and adherence.
