Ingrians

The Ingrians, also known as Izhorians, are a Finnic ethnic group historically inhabiting Ingria, a region in northwestern Russia. They are closely related to the Finns and Karelians. Their traditional lands were located south of the Neva River, encompassing areas around present-day Saint Petersburg. The Ingrian language, a Finnic language, is a key marker of their identity, though it is critically endangered.

Historically, Ingrians have been a minority group within the larger Russian and Swedish empires that controlled their territory. Their religious affiliation has varied, with many adhering to Lutheranism due to historical Swedish influence, while others followed Orthodox Christianity. The Ingrian people have faced significant periods of repression and displacement throughout their history, particularly in the 20th century. Soviet policies led to forced deportations, collectivization, and assimilation attempts, which severely impacted their demographic and cultural continuity.

Despite these challenges, efforts are underway to preserve the Ingrian language and cultural heritage. Some Ingrians continue to live in their ancestral lands, while others have migrated to Finland and Estonia. The Ingrian community is small, but they maintain a distinct cultural identity shaped by their unique history and geographical location. Their cultural traditions often include folk music, traditional crafts, and specific culinary practices that reflect their Finnic roots and regional influences.
