Infusionssetwechsel refers to the regular replacement of infusion sets used for subcutaneous drug or fluid delivery, including insulin pump therapy and other continuous infusions. The infusion set typically consists of a soft cannula, tubing and a reservoir, which remains attached to the patient for a limited period. In diabetes care with continuous subcutaneous insulin infusion (CSII), manufacturers commonly suggest changing the infusion set every two to three days. For other therapies, the recommended interval depends on the product and local guidelines.

Site selection and rotation are important to ensure absorption and skin health. Suitable areas include the abdomen, the front or outer thigh, the buttocks, and the upper arm. Sites should be rotated within and between regions to reduce lipodystrophy and irritation, and to maintain reliable insulin or medication delivery.

Preparation and procedure involve several steps. Wash hands, gather supplies, and check expiry dates. Remove the old infusion set carefully without pulling the tubing. Clean the new site with an alcohol wipe and let it dry. Insert the new cannula according to device instructions, connect and prime the tubing to remove air, and verify that flow is proceeding correctly.

Indications to change earlier include leakage, dislodgement, kinking of tubing, pump alarms, redness, swelling, pain at the site, fever, or signs of infection. If any concern arises, change the set promptly and seek professional advice.

Disposal and safety considerations: dispose of used infusion sets in a sharps container, and do not reuse sets. Record the time of change and keep the site clean and dry to minimize complications.
