Infusates

Infusates are substances that are administered to a patient through an infusion, a process where a fluid is slowly introduced into the body, typically intravenously. These fluids are usually delivered via a needle or catheter inserted into a vein. Infusates can encompass a wide variety of substances, each designed to address specific medical needs.

Common examples of infusates include intravenous fluids, such as saline or Ringer's lactate, which are used to maintain hydration, correct electrolyte imbalances, or serve as a vehicle for other medications. Medications themselves are frequently administered as infusates, including antibiotics to fight infection, chemotherapy drugs to treat cancer, pain relievers for managing discomfort, and electrolytes like potassium or magnesium to correct deficiencies.

Nutritional solutions, known as parenteral nutrition, are also infusates. These are designed for patients who cannot receive adequate nutrition through their digestive system and contain a carefully balanced mixture of carbohydrates, proteins, fats, vitamins, and minerals. Blood products, such as packed red blood cells, plasma, or platelets, are also administered as infusates to treat conditions like anemia or bleeding disorders. The specific composition and administration rate of an infusate are determined by the patient's medical condition and the intended therapeutic effect.
