Információegységek refer to the fundamental units used to measure and quantify information. The most basic unit is the bit, which can represent one of two states, typically denoted as 0 or 1. This binary nature is the foundation of all digital information processing.

A collection of bits forms larger units. A byte, for example, commonly consists of eight bits, allowing for the representation of a wider range of values, often used to store characters, numbers, or small instructions. Further multiples are used for larger amounts of data. A kilobyte (KB) is approximately one thousand bytes, a megabyte (MB) is approximately one million bytes, and a gigabyte (GB) is approximately one billion bytes. These prefixes, derived from the metric system, are widely used in computing to describe file sizes, storage capacities, and data transfer rates.

The exact definition of these larger units can sometimes vary. In some contexts, particularly in older computing systems or certain scientific fields, prefixes like kilo, mega, and giga refer to powers of 2 (e.g., a kilobyte as 1024 bytes). However, in modern usage, especially concerning storage and networking, they more commonly refer to powers of 10 (e.g., a gigabyte as 1,000,000,000 bytes). This distinction is important for accurate understanding of data quantities.
